Step 2: Pass USMLE Step 1 – Usually taken during or after MBBS (assesses basic sciences).

Step 3: Pass USMLE Step 2 CK – Clinical knowledge exam.

Step 4: Pass USMLE Step 2 CS (formerly required, now discontinued – check updates) / OET Medicine (currently required for ECFMG certification).

Step 5: ECFMG Certification – Get your MBBS verified and certified.

Step 6: Apply for General Surgery Residency – Through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service), typically requires US clinical experience, letters of recommendation, research, and strong Step scores.

Step 7: Match into a categorical General Surgery residency – 5-7 years of training (includes research years depending on program).

Step 8: Pass USMLE Step 3 – During residency (licensing exam).

Step 9: Complete General Surgery residency – Eligible for board certification (ABS).

Final step: Fellowship – 1-3 additional years for subspecialties (e.g., cardiothoracic, pediatric, transplant surgery).

**Key notes**
- Very competitive; aim for high USMLE scores and US clinical experience (electives, observerships).
- Research and strong LORs from US surgeons are crucial.

Step 1: Clear USMLE Steps 1 & 2 (CK) – During or after MBBS.

Step 2: Match into a US residency – Choose a specialty with research focus (e.g., Internal Medicine, Pathology).

Step 3: Complete residency – Gain clinical licensure.

Step 4: Pursue research track – During residency, engage in lab/clinical research; consider a 'research fellowship' or 'postdoctoral research position'.

Step 5: Optional: PhD or Master’s in Clinical Research – Enhances research credentials.

Step 6: Obtain US medical license – After passing USMLE Step 3 and residency.

Final step: Transition to research career – Join academic medical center as 'physician-scientist' or move into 'industry R&D' (pharma/biotech).
